Plaque Mounts: The “New” Framed Art

You’ve seen plaque mounts around.  Maybe you’ve even admired their innate ability to really showcase a certificate or important document in a long term, wall-hanging manner.

But have you ever considered a plaque mount for your artwork?

Nature and wedding photographs, prints of your child’s drawings, an old map that has significance to you – these are all great options for plaque mounts.

First, let’s look at the how:

MAKING A PLAQUE MOUNT

  • Printing: Your chosen image is printed using our high quality ink jet printers and beautiful, professional papers.  You can also send us an existing image to mount, but we can’t guarantee perfect adherence.  And please note: we can’t mount something that is already laminated.
  • Mounting: A thin, transparent mounting tissue is placed between the MDF (cut to size) and the print.  When heat and pressure is applied via a vacuum press, the tissue liquefies and adheres the print to the board. Laminate may be placed over the board at this time (it also requires heat and pressure), or this may be done in a second step.
  • Finishing: The plaque edges are bevelled, which trims about 1/8″ from each side of your print. Then colored foil is added to the edges for that cool, bordered style.

So why should you go for a plaque mount instead of getting your special pictures framed?  For a number of reasons:

GLASS-FREE

Plaque mounts have no glass (and no sharp metal frame, if that’s your usual style).  The printed image is laminated after being mounted to the board, giving it as much protection as any glazing, minus the potential for cracking, shattering, and sharp pieces.

Plus, that laminate keeps glare to a minimum, making sure viewers of your artwork see the beautiful image, not their own face and the ceiling light overhead!

BORDER CHOICE

So many choices!
So many choices!

Picture frame price is based on many different factors, which means the cost of a frame can range from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars. With plaque mounts, you get to choose from 16 different edge colors, and pay nothing extra!

The edges of the plaque are neatly bevelled, so the color you choose creates a nice, crisp border, but doesn’t distract from the lovely image you’re displaying.

DISPLAY OPTIONS

Mat, or no mat? You have more options than that when it comes to plaque mounts! Choose from our five awesome selections:

  • Flat Plaque Mount – A traditional plaque, with image mounted on a 3/8″ thick (depth) piece of MDF.
  • Box Plaque Mount – The flat mounted section is affixed to an MDF frame that increases the depth to 1″
  • Raised Plaque Mount – The image plaque is affixed to another 3/8″ thick plaque in a solid color, that is wider on each side, creating a “recessed mat” look.  The edges of both are bevelled and your choice of color.
  • Float Plaque Mount – The image is mounted on a thinner board, which is then affixed to a frame that is inset on the back.  When hung, the frame pushes the image out from the wall about 1″, but is invisible from an angle, so the plaque appears to “float” away from the wall.
  • Matted Plaque Mount – Similar to a raised mount, except the solid color is on the same board, directly behind the image.

COST AND LONGEVITY

Plaque mounts cost less than a framed artwork – usually about 40% less!

At KeenART Media, your plaque image is printed with archival inks on top quality photographic or fine art paper (some options are conservation, ie: acid-free). Acid-free tissue is used to attach the print to the MDF, and the laminate is UV-protected to further minimize fading.  Good deal!
